The Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Catholic University in Ruzomberok offers degree programmes at the bachelor (BA) and master (MA) level. At both levels, students may choose a single major study programme in political science or a double major study programme in political science combined with either English and American studies, German studies, history, philosophy or Slovak language and literature. During their study, students explore the most important issues of the Slovak and international politics. The education process focuses not only on attaining theoretical knowledge about political institutions and processes but students are also encouraged to improve such practical skills as critical thinking, proper assessment, correct interpretation, argumentation, preparation of the projects, intellectual persistence and critical self-reflection. Students learn to neutrally evaluate the trends within the social and political developments and to participate in expert discussions about the current issues of society and politics. The department cooperates with several high schools within the project High School Students on their Journey Towards Responsible Citizenship and it organizes the nationwide essay writing contest called My Europe.
