BA programmes

The faculty provides an undergraduate education in the area of humanities, social sciences and education. It takes three years (6 semesters) and the graduates earn a BA degree. Currently the faculty offers 36 accredited BA study programmes, which can be divided into three main groups. They are single-major study programmes, double-major study programmes and teacher-training programmes.

Single-Major Study Programmes

The programme provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the given field and its basic methodology. Graduates are usually expected to continue their study at a graduate level or they can seek employment in public or state administration, European institutions, non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions, tourism, foundations, modern media and various businesses.

Students can choose one of the following fields as their single-major study programme:

  • English and American Studies
  • German Studies
  • History
  • Journalism
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Religious Studies
  • Slovak Language and Literature

Double-Major Study Programmes

The double-major programme allows the combination of two study fields (in a 50:50 ratio). Applicants can choose from the offers below in any combination of two fields according to their preference. Graduates of the double-major studies have a broader scope of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional preparation in the chosen fields. The achieved knowledge and skills may grant them a considerably better position in the job market. Graduates are usually expected to continue their study at a graduate level or they can seek employment in public or state administration, European institutions, non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions, tourism, foundations, modern media and various businesses.

Students can choose any two of the following fields as their double-major study programme:

  • English and American Studies
  • German Studies
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Religious Studies
  • Slovak Language and Literature

Teacher-Training Programmes

Apart from the two chosen subject specializations, the programme is focused on providing an overview of the broader contexts of education. Students adopt the basics of school pedagogy and psychology, and will learn about the organizational conditions of institutional education. To become fully qualified teachers, graduates are expected to continue their study at a graduate level. Otherwise, they can be employed as teaching assistants, teachers of children’s extracurricular activities or they can find positions in either state or public administration, school administration or in educational or other institutions.

Students can combine any two of the following subjects as their teacher-training programme:

  • Teaching of English Language and Literature
  • Teaching of German Language and Literature
  • Teaching of History
  • Teaching of Philosophy
  • Teaching of Religious Studies
  • Teaching of Slovak Language and Literature

In addition, there is a possibility of an interfaculty study of teacher-training programmes. In such a case students can combine one of the above-mentioned subjects offered by the Faculty of Arts and Letters with one subject from the offers of the Faculty of Education, The Catholic University in Ruzomberok:
